The idea for Disaster Assistance Network was born in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Watching the devastation unfold across North Carolina and Virginia, Stephen and I looked at each other and asked the question: “What can we do?”
That question turned into action.
Stephen traveled to Asheville, NC, for ten days to assist in recovery efforts. With his background in law enforcement, fire, and rescue, he joined a team assigned to body recovery, working alongside cadaver dogs in the field. Before he left, we collected supply donations from friends and neighbors and delivered them to a church just outside Asheville.
That experience showed us how much a small, organized group of people can accomplish — and it inspired us to create DAN, so we can continue to help wherever and whenever disaster strikes.
